TOUR TO MANU NATIONAL PARK 4 DAYS FROM CUSCO

Uncover the amazon’s mysteries and legends on this great adventure, live this fascinating trip to the vast national park in the Amazon Basin which covers almost 20,000 sq km (12,427 sq mi) and is one of the best places in South America to see a stunning variety of tropical wildlife. Progressive in its emphasis on preservation, Unesco declared Manu a Biosphere Reserve in 1977 and a World Natural Heritage Site in 1987. Entry is only with guide and permit.

One reason the park is so successful in preserving such a large tract of virgin jungle and its wildlife is that it’s remote and relatively inaccessible to people, and therefore has not been exploited by rubber tappers, loggers, oil companies or hunters. The Manu national park is doubtless the world has one of the most pristine primary rain forest, this part of the jungle of Peru is home for many species of mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, insects, and home for many species of trees, orchids, ferns, etc. Likewise it includes several oxbow lakes, and clay licks where hundreds of birds including macaws feed on clay

Day 1: Cusco (3,300m.s.n.m.) – Andes- (3650m.s.n.m.) Cloud Forest (1,700m.s.n.m.)

We set out early in the morning from Cusco, embarking on our adventure in one of our vehicles. Throughout the journey, we pass through captivating valleys and picturesque communities, offering glimpses of the region’s diverse landscapes. Along the way, we make a stop to explore intriguing pre-Incan tombs, delving into the rich historical heritage of the area. Our next destination is the beautiful colonial town of Paucartambo, where we take the opportunity to visit a fascinating museum, immersing ourselves in the local culture and traditions.

To keep us energized, a delicious packed lunch is provided as we continue our journey. As we venture further, we enter the enchanting cloud forest, renowned for its abundant biodiversity. This pristine ecosystem is home to remarkable endemic species, including the iconic Spectacled Bear and the vibrant Cock of the Rock bird. The cloud forest also boasts a stunning array of orchids, bromeliads, and ferns, creating an amazing display of natural beauty. Appreciate the breathtaking surroundings as we make our way to San Pedro de Orquideas Lodge, our comfortable accommodation for the night, where you can unwind and soak in the serene ambiance of the cloud forest.

Day 2: Cloud Forest – Erika Lodge (400m.s.n.m.)

In the early morning hours, we embark on an exciting quest to spot the mesmerizing Cock of the Rock, Peru’s national bird, known for its unique courtship dance. Witnessing this remarkable display is truly a special experience. Afterward, we gather for a delicious breakfast, replenishing our energy for the day ahead.

Continuing our journey, we make our way to the charming town of Pilcopata, immersing ourselves in the local atmosphere. From there, we proceed to the Port of Atalaya, situated along the picturesque shores of the Madre de Dios River at an elevation of 700 meters above sea level. Here, we board a boat that will take us to our private reserve, named “Erika.” During the boat ride, keep your eyes peeled for a multitude of bird species, including beautiful herons, graceful vultures, and elegant cormorants. The diversity of avian life is truly impressive.

Once we arrive at the reserve, we embark on an amazing journey along the trails that meander through the transition zone between the high and low jungle. Accompanied by our knowledgeable guide, we have the privilege of discovering and learning about the fascinating wildlife that surrounds us. Prepare to be amazed by the sheer diversity of species that call this area home.

As the day transitions into night, we have a special opportunity for a captivating night walk. This gives us a chance to catch glimpses of nocturnal creatures such as insects and amphibians, adding another layer of wonder to our rainforest experience. The night concludes as we retreat to our comfortable accommodations at Erika Lodge, where we can rest and rejuvenate in preparation for the adventures that lie ahead.

Free Option – Rafting:

In Pilcopata you will have 90 minutes of rafting (grade I & II) on the Koñeq and/or Madre de Dios Rivers. You can enjoy the beautiful landscape and have a swim in the refreshing wáter.

Day 3: Erika Lodge

During our invigorating morning walk, our knowledgeable guide will skillfully point out and provide insights into the remarkable variety of wildlife that surrounds us. It’s an opportunity to truly appreciate the rich biodiversity of the rainforest as we explore the captivating trails.

Afterward, we board a boat to gracefully cross the river, embarking on a trail that leads us through the verdant landscape for approximately 30 minutes. Along the way, our senses are delighted by the fascinating flora that thrives in this vibrant ecosystem. Look out for the delicate sensitive plants, vibrant heliconias, and an assortment of enticing fruits, each contributing to the tapestry of life in the rainforest.

Continuing our expedition, we arrive at the breathtaking lake Machuwasi, where a unique adventure awaits us. Here, we take to the water on paddle rafts, allowing us to observe a fascinating array of bird species. Keep a keen eye out for the primitive Hoatzin, a bird with intriguing characteristics. With a bit of luck, we may also encounter alligators, playful monkeys, and majestic capybaras, further enhancing our wildlife encounters and creating cherished memories.

As night descends, we embark on an enchanting night walk around our lodge. This nocturnal expedition offers a glimpse into the vibrant world of insects and amphibians that come to life under the moonlit sky. It’s a chance to witness the captivating creatures that thrive during these nighttime hours, adding an extra layer of wonder to our rainforest experience.

Day 4: Erika Lodge – Cusco


In the early hours of the morning, we eagerly board our boat and set off towards Collpa, a clay wall situated by the river. This unique location attracts a variety of parrot species, including the vibrant blue-headed parrot, the lively white-eyed parakeet, and perhaps even the amazing Maracana Macaw. Here, these colorful birds gather each morning to supplement their diet with essential minerals and salts. It’s a captivating sight to witness these birds in their natural habitat.

After this mesmerizing activity, we return to Erika Lodge, where a delicious breakfast awaits us. Energized and satisfied, we proceed to pack our belongings, preparing for the journey back. Boarding the boat once again, we make our way to Atalaya Port, where our waiting vehicle stands ready to transport us back to Cusco. Along the way, we enjoy a tasty lunch, savoring the flavors of the region.

As the day progresses, we continue our scenic journey, arriving in Cusco early in the evening. Our adventure in the rainforest may have come to an end, but the memories and experiences we’ve gained will stay with us forever.
