For the Hike from KM 104 to the Sun Gate and then into Machu Picchu, We will pick you up at your hotel around 4am in Cusco, ask your hotel for a packed breakfast the night before. Them we continue in our private transportation to the train station in Ollantaytambo. If your hotel is in the Sacred Valley, pick up is at 5:30am.

The journey to Ollantaytambo  takes about 1 hour 45 minutes to catch the Expedition Train at 6:10AM. From there we take the train to KM 104, the starting point of the Inca Trail. After crossing the Urubamba River on a picturesque foot bridge, you need to show your passport at the checkpoint. The Inca site of Chachabamba is a short walk from the check point. After exploring this site for a few minutes, we begin our 3-hour trek to Wiñay Wayna archaeological site (2,650/8,747ft) also known as Forever Young in Quechua.

The first hour and a half is a gentle hike upward. Along the way, we stop at several outlooks where you have an expansive view of the Urubamba River and pass through several microclimates, including a cloud forest. Before facing our steepest challenge of the trek so far, we stop at a waterfall to refresh take some pics and collect ourselves. The Wiñay Wanay is built on the mountain side, the climb to the top is broken into sections, stopping for interesting information about this fascinating Inca site. The guide stops as each section to share how, when and why it was built, when it was discovered and what it was used for. With some sites still hidden under the dense jungle.

Once we concur this steep incline, we stop at the campsite of the same name to enjoy our gourmet box lunch.  The pace on this hike is fast, so that we can make it on a reasonable time at Machu Picchu, to enjoy a fully guided tour inside the citadel.

After having our well-deserved rest, just one last one hour trek before reaching the Sun Gate (2,730m/9,00ft). We know we are close to the Sun Gate when we experience our last challenge with a final set of steep stairs carved directly into the bedrock by the Inca Trail. These steps are usually referred to as the ¨gringo killer steps¨ or ¨monkey steps¨. Once you walk through the Sun Gate the first full view of Machu Picchu, stand in front of you. It’s absolutely stunning and will leave you speechless. It is just an hour hike down the flat rock stairs to Machu Picchu. Be sure to have your camera ready to take all of the incredible views of Machu Picchu Citadel along the way.

Once we reach Machu Picchu, you will have time to get more photos from the viewing platforms above the site, the “House of the Guardians” where you can take the famous postcard pictures of Machu Picchu. Your guide will give you a tour, which takes about two hours. You will see some of the most important parts of Machu Picchu.
