Trekking to Laguna Paron in Huaraz

LAGUNA PARON LAKE TOUR AND SHORT WALK

If you’re planning on visiting Huaraz you absolutely need to visit Laguna Paron. The largest lake in the Cordillera Blanca, it’s also one of the most beautiful. This guided tour is sure to leave you speechless and will give you memories that last a lifetime. Here are some things you can expect on your adventure to Laguna Paron:

Altitude: The mirador over the lake sits at 4,200m/13,779ft. This is the highest you will trek as the lake itself is a little lower than this.

Distance: If you choose to hike from the trailhead entry, the total distance is approximately a 20km round trip. Should you take a tour that goes all the way to the lake entrance, you need only do a short walk (45 minutes there and back) up to the mirador.

Time: This is a long day trip from Huaraz, requiring a start at either 5 a.m. or 8 a.m. dependent upon the type of tour you take. Tours are usually back in Huaraz by about 6 p.m.

Let’s traverse the Cordillera Blanca with this Parón Lagoon trek that will allow us to get to know the biggest lagoon in the Cordillera Blanca, and have the privilege of viewing the mountains that form it.

Itinerary for trekking to Laguna paron:

  • We will leave Huaraz to the north, heading towards the Alley of Huaylas.
  • The route will take us to Caraz, to then continue to the front of Parón.
  • From this point, we will follow the road to the Parón Lagoon, at 4,200m/13,779ft high.
  • We will take a pause to take photographs of the turquoise lagoon and the Pirámide Garcilaso mountain.
  • From here we will go through the ravine watching queñuales, typical tree from the Andes and the higher mountains of the Cordillera Blanca: Chacraraju, Artesonraju and Huandoy.
  • Continue the 3 hours trek until arriving at the Artesoncocha Lagoon, at 4,300 m high, where we will make another 1 hour pause to eat and take photographs.
  • We will return to get on the bus and go back to the city of Huaraz.

LAGUNA PARON TOURS

  • If you stay in Huaraz, visiting Laguna Paron with a tour is probably your best bet as it makes sense financially and time-wise.
  • From Huaraz, it takes about three hours to reach the lagoon and the public transport to Laguna Paron is not reliable at the moment because it is not that heavily visited.
  • Tours start early in the morning (around 5 AM and then at 8 AM) and the bus will take you directly to the lake. It means the only hiking you can do is a short walk on the lake’s shore or climb to the viewpoint.
  • You can book Laguna Paron day-tour in advance with SAM Corpotations. Visiting Laguna Paron from Huaraz is a long day, be prepared to spend eight to ten hours on the road.
  • It is also possible to take a tour of Lake Paron from Caraz – you will save at least two hours because the village is closer to the lake.
