The newly discovered Rainbow Mountain is the most eye-catching freak of nature, you will ever come across. There is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. These astonishingly striking colors are formed by weathering, environmental conditions and sedimentary mineral deposits over time. Puno is one of the most important cities in the edge of Titicaca Lake. The highest navigable lake in the world. The city of Puno is the Folk Capital of America, because of its 300 variety of traditional dances. During festivities such as “Virgen de la Candelaria” the city’s patron, the locals perform typical dances like The “Caporales” and the “Diablada”. Thousands of tourists and locals make their way here during the month of February.
Puno is located on cold high plains at 4000 m. above sea level. The city also known as the land of camelidae, was the home to the Tiahuanaco culture many thousands of years ago. This culture has some of the most beautiful historical artifacts such as Puerta del Sol (The Sun gateway), a temple sculpture made of stone.
It mostly has buildings made of adobe and roofs covered with metal panels. The city center is small. If you want to experience a bit of the nightlife then head over to Jiron Lima, where you will find different restaurants and vibey spots with great music.
Amantaní island is located at 36 kilometers from the port of Puno. This island is scattered with lush vegetation. A great place to visit, with plenty of natural viewpoints of the lake, islands and mountains that surround it. From these viewpoints you can also see the prehispanic temples of Pacha Tata, de Pacha Mama, Incachincana, Inca Tihana and the cemetery of mummies.
The Uros “floating islands” is a group of 60 artificially islands made entirely of totora reeds. They locals navigate their traditional boats also made from totora reeds, creating a unique and interesting way of life. The residents of Taquile, Suasi, and Amantaní are known for their kindness, ancestral weaving skills, pre-Columbian constructions, and sprawling countryside. The Titicaca National Reserve (36,180 hectares) protects extensive stretches of totora reeds and various species of plants and animals.
