Day trip to the stunning Rainbow Mountain

Rainbow Mountain is the most beautiful freak of nature that you will ever see in your travels. It stands tall (5,020 m/17,060ft) and its uniqueness is its many vibrant colors. FROM PUNO – Discover Lake Titicaca

The city of Puno is the Folk Capital of South America, for many reasons one being the 300 or so traditional dances. During festivities such as “Virgen de la Candelaria”, the locals perform typical dances like the “Caporales” and the “Diablada”. Thousands from all over the world flock to Puno during the month of February to experience these unique festivals.

Puno is located on cold high plains at 4,000m above sea level. Puno was home to the Tiahuanaco culture many thousands of years ago. This culture has some of the most beautiful historical artifacts such Silustani, the funeral towers just outside of Puno.

The city is mostly filled with buildings made of adobe and roofs covered with metal panels, the plaza has a nice church and on certain days the local single ladies wait for potenial husbands dressed in their finest. The city center is small. If you want to experience a bit of the nightlife then take a short journey over to Jiron Lima, where you will find different restaurants and vibey spots with great music.

Amantaní island is located at 36 kilometers from the port of Puno. A great place to visit, with plenty of natural viewpoints of the lake, islands and mountains that surround it. From these viewpoints you can also see the prehispanic temples of Pacha Tata, de Pacha Mama, Incachincana, Inca Tihana and the cemetery of mummies.

Not far from Amantani island is Taquille Island, a rock island inhabited by the most softly spoken people you will ever encounter. The Uros “floating islands” is a group of 60 artificially created islands entirely made up of totora reeds. The residents of Taquile, Suasi, and Amantaní are known for their kindness, ancestral weaving skills.
