Hike Up to the Inka Bridge at Machu Picchu

INCA BRIDGE

The trail to the Inca Bridge wraps around the backside of a mountain in the opposite direction of the Machu Picchu ruins. A special ticket is not needed to walk the path; however, daily traffic to the Inca Bridge is documented. Moreover, it’s essential for each visitor to have an entrance ticket for Circuit #1 or 2.

As you embark on the approximately 25-minute hike along a fairly narrow path toward the bridge, it’s important to note that while the climb isn’t steep, some of the drop-offs along the edges may make some people uneasy.

The Inca Bridge itself is made of a few narrow logs perched above a sheer vertical drop. Notably, it’s believed to have served as a secret entrance to Machu Picchu. Crossing the bridge is strictly forbidden today for safety reasons. Nevertheless, you are welcome to take as many photos as you like.

On the return hike, you’re likely to ponder whether or not you would have the courage to cross the bridge if you lived during the time of the Incas. For more detailed information about the Inca Bridge, please refer to the provided Inca Bridge Information below.

How to find the trail and how is it?

Small signposts conveniently guide you toward the trailhead that leads to the Inca Bridge. In case you decide to explore the site independently and are having difficulty locating the trailhead, don’t hesitate to approach one of the many Machu Picchu wardens for assistance. They will gladly point you in the right direction.

Moreover, the trek to the Inca Bridge is relatively easy, as the trail is well-maintained and mostly flat. While there are some steep drops along one side that may induce a sense of unease, the path itself is wide enough to provide a certain level of security. It could be a bit challenging for those who are not comfortable with heights, but I encourage you to give it a try, as the experience is truly rewarding.

It’s important to note that you do not need an additional ticket to visit and admire the Inca Bridge. It is included in your general admission to Machu Picchu.
